WHAT WE CHOOSE TO CARRY FORWARD

By Christmas afternoon, the wrapping paper is already in the trash. Boxes are flattened. Batteries are installed. Some gifts are being used, others quietly set aside. And almost without noticing, the day begins to slow down.

That's usually when the real weight of Christmas shows up—not in what was opened, but in what lingers.

Some gifts are meant to be temporary. They bring joy in the moment, then fade as life moves forward. That's not a failure of the gift—it's simply how things work.

What lasts tends to arrive more quietly.

It's the sound of a house full of people who don't always agree, choosing to sit together anyway. It's the grace of letting something go that didn't need to be carried into another year. It's the memory of being seen, listened to, or welcomed back without conditions.

These aren't things you can wrap. They don't fit in a box. And you usually don't realize their value until much later—sometimes years later—when you discover they're still with you.

Christmas has a way of reminding us of that.

Not everything meaningful announces itself. Some of the most important moments happen in between the photos. In the conversations that weren't planned. In the pauses where no one felt the need to fill the silence.

For some, the day brings joy. For others, it brings longing. For many, it brings both at the same time.

And that's okay.

What matters isn't whether the day looks perfect. What matters is what carries forward once it's over.

The patience you practiced. The forgiveness you offered—or received. The decision to be present instead of productive. The choice to stay, even when leaving would have been easier.

Those are the things that outlast the gifts.

When December 25 becomes December 26, the decorations come down and life resumes its pace. But the parts of the day that mattered most don't disappear with the wrapping paper.

They stay—shaping the year ahead in ways we don't always see right away.

And maybe that's the point.
