The February Financial Check-In

A Simple Audit to Break the Loop

The first thing most people do when life changes is… nothing.

Not out of laziness. Out of momentum. The direct deposit keeps landing. The subscriptions keep renewing. The beneficiary form from a decade ago stays exactly where it is. And for a while, that's fine—until it isn't.

February's a strange month. The January rush of resolutions has faded, tax season hasn't hit full panic mode yet, and there's this odd little holiday where we watch a rodent predict the weather. Punxsutawney Phil isn't exactly batting a thousand—and neither are most forecasters.

You don't need predictions. You need preparation.

This is a 20-minute check-in—a quick scan of the areas that quietly drift out of date while you're busy living your life. Think of it as changing the batteries in your smoke detectors. Not exciting. But the kind of thing you're glad you did.

People & Permissions: Who Has Access to What?

Life changes. The paperwork usually doesn't.

Beneficiaries:

When's the last time you checked who's listed on your retirement accounts, life insurance, or old 401(k) plans? These designations often take precedence over instructions in a will, so an outdated name can create real problems for the people you care about.

Account access:

If you were unavailable for 30 days, could your spouse or partner access what they need? It may be worth reviewing who's authorized and whether your key documents are current.

Where things live:

Not passwords in an email—but does someone know where to find the important documents if they had to?

Leaks & Drift: Plug the Small Drains

One forgotten subscription doesn't hurt. Ten of them become a car payment.

Subscription audit:

That streaming service you "canceled" last summer? Check your statements. Cloud storage, apps, memberships, annual renewals—they add up quietly.

Fee creep:

Some account fees increase without fanfare. Pull your last few statements and look for charges that weren't there a year ago.

Duplicate services:

Two cloud storage plans after a phone switch is a classic.

Spend 15 minutes with your bank and credit card statements. Cancel one thing you forgot you were paying for. Done.

Life Changes: Does Your Setup Still Fit?

Your finances were built around a version of your life that may not exist anymore.

Income shifts:

New job? Raise? Bonus structure change? Your withholding and savings rates might need a second look.

Household changes:

Marriage, divorce, new baby, kid heading to college, aging parent moving in—each one ripples through insurance, taxes, and cash flow.

Big purchases:

New car, new home, new monthly obligation. If your budget was built before that payment existed, it's worth a refresh.

If something material changed in the last 12 months, jot it down. That's usually the whole problem.

Digital Locks: Your Money Life Is a Login Life

These days, most financial friction starts with a compromised account or a locked-out login.

Multi-factor authentication (MFA):

Is it turned on for your email, bank, and investment accounts? If you do one thing from this list, do that.

Recovery info:

That backup phone number—is it still yours? Password resets don't help if they're going to an old number.

Alerts:

Transaction alerts and login notifications catch problems early. If you're not getting them, turn them on.

Final Thought
