On October 9, 1940, as German planes bombed Liverpool during World War II, a child was born who would go on to change the sound of modern music: John Winston Lennon. His arrival in the middle of an air raid is one of those details history tucks into the margins—proof that even in moments of destruction, something remarkable can begin.
Most fans know him as John Lennon, but his full name—John Winston Lennon—was a nod to Britain's wartime leader, Winston Churchill. His parents hoped the name would carry strength and resilience, a fitting choice for a child born into uncertainty.

Lennon's childhood wasn't easy. He was largely raised by his Aunt Mimi, who didn't quite believe in music as a career. When John wanted his first guitar, Mimi only agreed to let it into the house if he promised to finish school. She even warned him:

The Beatles as we know them nearly didn't happen. In 1957, Lennon was playing with his skiffle group, The Quarrymen, at a church fair when a mutual friend introduced him to a young Paul McCartney.
